Most book lovers get a thrill from receiving books in the mail, from a monthly Book of the Month subscription to ARCs from publishers or swaps from friends. Over on Instagram, Bookstagrammers are showing their support for postal carriers by posting red, white, and blue book stacks under the #postalproudchallenge.
Not only do postal workers put themselves at risk right now due to COVID-19, the agency itself faces financial and political pressures in part because of the $10 billion loan they received as part of last month’s CARE Act–which Trump has threatened to withhold if they don’t make significant managerial and operational changes including increasing fees. Can you imagine what would happen to book mail if the USPS had to quadruple shipping rates? (Please see articles below for sources.)
If you are on Bookstagram, please join the challenge to show your support for postal workers! You can also buy some stamps to support the USPS. If you buy Forever stamps, you can use them for First Class Mail, well, forever! Last time I ordered, I received some beautiful stamps, including the new Earth Day stamp!
